Sudwala Caves

Nelspruit

The Sudwala Caves are the oldest known caves in the world. Located in Mpumalanga in the dolomite rock of the Mankelekele Mountain range, lies a series of chambers and tunnels. Formed over 3000 million years ago, the caves display fossils as well as some magnificent stalagmites and stalactites.

Visitors to the caves can take an hour long tour through the tunnels into the main chamber known as the PR Owen Amphitheatre which is about 70 metres in diametre and 37 metres high.

The cave is named after Mr Phillippus Rudolf Owen who owned the farm where the caves were found, in 1965, and first opened them to the public. The caves are famous for the large number of bats which permanently hang from the dark ceilings.
